Day 1 - Crate Day ... (54)
April 13, 2007. Delivery, un-crating, and parts inventory.
Day 2 - Inventory + VS ... (24)
Day 2. Completed inventory of parts and organized all but skins. Quick cleco of vertical stab at end of day.
Day 3 - VS Fabrication ... (15)
Day 3 - Not much happened today. Did not get as much time to work. Had to fabricate spar caps from angle stock and deburr unfinished edges. Some photos show the cuts required, others show unfinished and finished edges.
Day 4 - More VS Fab. ... (48)
Made more progress on the vertical stabilizer spar. Also, fabricated cradles to hold v. stab skins during assembly.
Day 5 - VS Skeleton Prep Complete ... (34)
Completed preparation of skeleton. This entailed assembly match drilling, grinding nose ribs to size, deburring, final drilling.
Day 6 - Tools Assembly ... (24)
Received the new air compressor and band saw. Spent the afternoon mostly assembling the band saw and frowning over the dents it had out of the box.
Day 7 - Workshop Management ... (20)
With the new big tools arriving, something needed to be done to gain back workspace. Created a ceiling loft to store skins and long parts and cleaned up.
Day 8 - Hole Deburring and Dimpling ... (22)
One last small workshop construction project (garden tool holder) and then back to the airplane: vinyl removal, hole deburring and skin and rib dimpling.
Day 9 - C-Frame Work Surface ... (12)
Not as much time to work today. But did complete the C-Frame work surface detailed by the Cleaveland Tools C-Frame table instructions provided with my C-Frame.
Day 10 - More Dimpling and Countersinking ... (21)
Not much time to work today as well. But I did complete dimpling of the skin (with 3 of less than desirable quality) and countersinking of the aft spar flanges.
Day 11 - Final Part Prep and Surface Prep ... (23)
Finished the last part work before riveting. Began surface prep of parts using alumiprep and alodine for the small parts. Will complete surface prep and prime tomorrow.
Day 12 - VS priming and start of riveting ... (29)
All VS parts were alumiprep-ed, alodined, and primed. Finally, assembly of the VS can begin!
Day 13 - VS Skeleton Riveting ... (29)
Completed most of the vertical stabilizer skeleton riveting. Tomorrow will be riveting the skeleton to the skin. So long as I do not damage skeleton or skin in the process, tomorrow the vertical stabilizer will be complete.
Day 14 - VS Complete! ... (48)
Final assembly and riveting of vertical stabilizer. Vertical stabilizer complete!
Day 15 - Rudder Start ... (40)
New component started: Rudder. Also photos of new tools: DRDT-2 dimpler and Wilton drill press.
Day 16 - Rudder final drilling and deburring. ... (51)
Almost ready to prime, seal and rivet. Just a little more hole deburring and dimpling on the skins to finish first.
Day 17 - Rudder Final Parts Prep ... (13)
Finished dimpling all parts in preparation for priming and riveting. Only step left is to countersink the trailing edge wedge.
Day 18 - Rudder alodine and prime ... (33)
Alodined and primed the rudder parts. Rudder now ready for assembly and riveting.
Day 19 - Start of Rudder Riveting ... (14)
Began riveting rudder components for final rudder assembly. Not much time for kit work today and consequently not much progress. But the progress that was made, turned out very nice.
Day 20 - Rudder Riveting + Trailing Edge Seal ... (69)
Riveted stiffeners and ribs to rudder skins. Also prepared the rudder trailing edge for riveting by sealing with pro-seal.
Day 21 - Rudder Riveting ... (49)
After taking 2 days off to let the pro-seal in the rudder trailing edge cure, it's back to rudder riveting.
Day 22 - Rudder Complete ... (63)
Finally wrapped up the last steps on the rudder. The rudder is now complete and it is time to move on to the horizontal stabilizer.
Day 23 - Horizontal Stabilizer Start ... (26)
Started assembly of the horizontal stabilizer. First tasks are to fabricate some components and then assemble the fore and aft spars along with caps, doubler plates, and hinges.
Day 24 - Horizonal Stabilizer, Spars priming and riveting. ... (61)
Primed the HS spars and associated parts. Riveted spar assemblies and sub-assemblies. Deburred all ribs in preparation for HS assembly. Also fabricated 4 HS cradles from MDF and 2x4 scraps to hold HS skins during assembly.
Day 25-26 - Wind+Fuselage arrival prep and delivery. ... (107)
Day 25 was spent preparing for the quick build fuselage and wings to arrive. Cradles with locking casters needed to be made to hold the wings and fuselage. Day 26 was the arrival day for the wings and fuselage. Lots of pictures of the new kit contents.
Day 26-39 - Lots of things. ... (97)
Wings and Fuselage inventory, systems planning, and Horizontal Stabilizer work: deburring, fabricating, assembling, drilling, priming, final assembly and start of riveting.
Day 40 - Panel Design ... (7)
I wanted to get all my avionics orders in before the big show in Oshkosh when lead times jump up with all the in-person orders. Ran through lots of options, think I am getting close to settling on equipment choices.
Day 41 - Riveting HS Nose Ribs ... (12)
Finally got time for starting the final assembly of the horizontal Stabilizer. The first step is to assemble and rivet the HS nose ribs. Completed this today.
Day 42-45 - HStab Complete! ... (97)
Finally arranged enough time to wrap up that pesky horizontal stabilizer. It is now complete! Finally get to move on to the elevators and after that, finally the tail cone!
Day 46-47 - Elevators ... (110)
Began work on the elevators. Fabricated and prepared all elevator parts and began preliminary assembly for match/final drilling.
Day 48 - More Elevators ... (46)
Completed the pre-assembly and drilling of the elevators. The elevators were then disassembled for hole deburring and dimpling.
Day 49 - Elevator Deburr and Dimpling ... (28)
With the match/final drilling completed, it was time to disassemble the elevators for hole deburring, dimpling and priming preparations. After removing the protective vinyl coating from the skins, the process was started.
Day 50 - More Panel Layout ... (4)
Spent some more time figuring out where things will sit in the panel. It takes more time than you think.
Day 51-58 - Elevators Nearing Completion ... (181)
Continued final assembly of the elevators. I also received my Garnin GPSMAP 496. There's a few photos of that too.
Day 59 - Elevator Trim Tabs ... (75)
Fabrication and assembly of the elevator trim tabs.
Day 60-70 - Start of tailcone ... (122)
Finally with the elevators out of the way, it's time for the last component of the empennage kit, the tail cone!
Day 71-80 - Continued painting and assembly of tailcone. ... (113)
Continued work on the tailcone. Disassembled after drilling. Deburred and dimples structures, then primed all parts. Also a few photos I tried to get of the recent lunar eclipse (might as well, they were on the same CF Card..)
Day 81-86 - Tailcone Riveting ... (16)
Continued riveting the tailcone!
